Explore our articles below to master the art of cedar hedge care. A healthy cedar hedge is an investment in your home's privacy and beauty. We created this handbook to take the guesswork out of maintaining your landscape so you can enjoy your outdoor space with confidence.

Why Choose Cedars For Your Property?

The Ultimate living Fence For Privacy & Beauty

There is a reason why cedar hedges are the hallmark of beautiful properties across Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. Unlike traditional wooden, chain-link or plastic P.V.C. fences that merely divide space and cause sounds to bounce and echo, a cedar hedge adds life, texture, and natural elegance to your home. Beyond their classic look, these 'living fences' act as powerful natural buffers. They effectively dampens echoes, reduce traffic noise, block unwanted views from neighbors often providing a level of height and privacy that traditional fences cannot match due to municipal height restrictions and create a tranquil sanctuary in your own backyard.  Whether you are aiming for a dense, formal privacy screen or a soft, organic landscape feature, cedars provide year round color and unmatched versatility. Unlike manufactured fencing that can fade or warp, a healthy cedar hedge grows stronger and more beautiful with each passing year, making it a sustainable investment that adds both natural charm and real value to your property year after year, all while being a more cost-effective, long term solution and investment compared to traditional fencing materials. At Cedars SD&G, we have helped countless homeowners transform their outdoor spaces into stunning, private escapes. We are dedicated to helping you create a lush, resilient landscape that will provide lasting privacy for decades to come.

Choosing The Right Location To Plant Cedars

Sunlight & Drainage Essentials

The foundation of a long lasting, vibrant hedge begins long before you plant your first tree. To ensure your cedars thrive right from the start, you must focus on two critical factors: sunlight and soil drainage. While cedars do well in areas with partial sunlight conditions, meaning, 3 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, they perform best in areas that offer consistent sunlight or full sun. The more sunlight they receive, the better they will perform, maintaining their density and full, lush appearance. Equally important is the quality of your soil; cedars dislike "wet feet." Does your property have long periods of standing water? While they can tolerate short periods of saturation, they perform best in well drained soil conditions. In contrast, poor drainage can trigger oxygen deprivation and root rot, two conditions that ultimately undermine the health and compromises the longevity of your hedge. If you are unsure about your site’s drainage, you can perform a simple "perk test". Dig a hole about 12 inches deep and fill it with water. If the water is still sitting there after 24 hours, your soil is likely too heavy and may require the addition of organic matter to improve drainage or the installation of a raised planting bed. By selecting an area that has appropriate sunlight and verifying your planting sites has appropriate drainage now, you can plant with confidence, knowing you've provided the perfect environment for your cedars to flourish and thrive as a permanent, growing asset to your property.

Space & Proximity, The Art Of Placement

The Ultimate living Fence For Privacy & Beauty

We’ve all seen a beautiful tree planted just a little too close to a house. It seemed like the perfect fit for the intended space when it was first tucked into the ground, but as the seasons passed, the tree grew, and the space became a problem. The Growth Reality, It's important to remember that when a cedar is first planted, it only represents a fraction of its potential size. As the tree matures, its branches will thicken and extend outward significantly over the years. If trees are planted too close to a building without accounting for their eventual height and width, you risk creating a crowded look that can hide your homes character rather than highlighting it.

Protecting Your Home, When foliage is crowded, branches can eventually scrape against your siding, obstruct windows, or grow directly onto your roofline. This doesn't just affect the health of the tree, it can also create damp environments against your home's exterior that may lead to unnecessary wear. We always recommend a generous buffer zone to allow for the tree's full, healthy expansion while ensuring your home remains protected and clear of encroaching foliage.

Why Placement Matters, Proper spacing isn't just about avoiding damage, it's about ensuring your landscape design stands the test of time. By calculating the right distance from structures today, you ensure a stress-free, beautiful privacy screen for decades to come.
