Cedars SD&G showcasing an established hedge forming privacy with professional hedge services Ottawa

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Cedars4sdg@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Eastern White Cedars can be planted from the moment the ground thaws in the spring all the way until the ground freezes in late autumn. These are incredibly hardy trees built for our climate. While early Spring and Fall are the obvious wettest seasons, which helps with natural irrigation.

It is important to remember that transplant shock lasts for one full year. This is why the quality of our trees and the size of our root balls are so critical. A well cultivated root ball provides the essential nutrients and stability the tree needs to thrive through those warmer seasons. Even if planted in early spring or late fall, cedars still require care during the establishment period, one full year after transplant.

This is where choosing a knowledgeable installer who provides expert services, detailed watering guides, and full warranty coverage is essential to your hedge's early establishment and long-term success.

Farm-Grown vs. "Charlie Brown" Swamp Cedars

No. To ensure the highest quality for our clients, Cedars SD&G exclusively offers premium, farm-grown Eastern White Cedars. Many "budget" suppliers sell wild bush or swamp-grown cedars—often called "Charlie Brown" trees—which are notorious for being thin, unpredictable, and having a high failure rate.

Unlike these wild varieties, our cultivated cedars are nurtured in optimal field conditions for years to achieve exceptional health, consistent thickness, and superior density. We harvest every tree fresh from our carefully managed fields only after an order is placed, guaranteeing the vitality and freshness of your new hedge investment. When you choose Cedars SD&G, you are choosing a sustainable, high-quality product that is far superior to naturally occurring wild varieties.

Want to see the difference? Visit OUR CEDARS page to learn why farm-grown quality is the right choice for a long-lasting privacy hedge.

Our specialty is premium, farm-grown Eastern White Cedars (Thuja Occidentalis), the gold standard of privacy hedges. These are superior quality, fast-growing trees, the same ones you see most commonly used for privacy hedges in neighborhoods across Ontario. Our cedars are farm-grown, planted, and cared for throughout the years in dedicated cedar tree fields. As a native Ontario species, they are ideally suited to our harsh Canadian climate and perfectly acclimated for the Ottawa and Southeastern Ontario regions.

Our cedars are the perfect choice for creating luscious, hardy, and thick privacy hedges that will enhance your property with quick privacy while increasing your property value as they grow. Be the envy of your neighbors, our premium quality trees ensure a beautiful and long-lasting natural fence that appreciates in value year after year, contrary to other costly fencing options.

The main difference is hardiness and growth habit. Emerald Cedars (Smaragd) from big box stores are often grown in the milder climates of British Columbia; while they look bright green in the store, they frequently struggle and die in Ontario’s harsh -30°C winters and unpredictable "freeze-thaw" cycles. They also tend to grow in individual, thin columns that leave gaps in your privacy.

Eastern White Cedars are native to Ontario. They are biologically built for our local soil and extreme weather. Because our farm-grown White Cedars are cultivated specifically for this region, they are much hardier as well as they grow much thicker. They can be pruned into a solid, seamless "green wall." While Emeralds stay as separate trees, Eastern White Cedars knit together to provide 100% total privacy that lasts a lifetime in the Ottawa and Kingston climate.

Generally, it’s really going to depend on your personal preference, your goals, and the size of the tree you choose. Some homeowners prefer to have the hedge as close to the line as possible to maximize their yard space, while others like to leave a small space in the back for easier access to prune and maintain the fence.

Our recommendation is to plant the trees well inside your property line to ensure the hedge remains entirely on your side. Planting directly on the property line allows your neighbor to have control over their side of the hedge, so keeping the entire tree on your property is highly recommended.

When planting closer to a fence, this method also helps prevent unwanted weed and grass growth in the back, making your perimeter much easier to maintain. Naturally, the trees will "feel" the presence of the fence and grow away from it, focusing their growth toward your yard to create that seamless green wall look.

What are the ideal sunlight requirements for Eastern White Cedar trees?

For maximum growth and density, it is recommended that Eastern White Cedars (Thuja Occidentalis) receive a minimum of 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day. While these hardy evergreens are adaptable to partial shade, full sunlight is the primary driver for a thick, lush privacy hedge. Providing ample sun exposure ensures the tree has the energy required to develop a robust root system and maintain vibrant green foliage from the base to the tip. In lower light conditions, cedars may grow more slowly and appear "leggy" or less dense. To achieve the fastest results for your landscaping project, planting in a location with partial to full sun will guarantee a faster-growing, more resilient hedge that offers year-round privacy and wind protection.
